Car AC or Heat Not Working? Diagnose the Pattern First.
Start with airflow, temperature, operating conditions, and warning signs. Avoid guessing that every warm-air complaint needs refrigerant.

Start by symptom
What changed?
Do not begin by guessing a failed part. Choose the closest symptom and record what still works, when the problem started, and whether it comes and goes.
AC blows warm
Airflow is present but outlet temperature stays warm, changes with driving speed, or cools only intermittently.
Cold driving, warm at idle
Cooling improves on the highway but fades in traffic, pointing toward airflow, fan, load, or system-control clues.
Weak or no blower
Little air reaches the vents, some fan speeds are missing, or airflow changes with noise from the dash.
Heat stays cold
The engine warms up but cabin air remains cold, varies with speed, or one side is different.
Windows keep fogging
Defrost airflow, temperature, air intake, or moisture control is not clearing the glass safely.
Noise or odor
Clicking, squealing, grinding, musty odor, burning smell, or an electrical odor appears with climate control.
Safe first checks
What you can check before opening equipment
These checks are designed to improve the diagnosis without touching refrigerant circuits, combustion components, high voltage, or moving machinery.
Compare idle versus driving, MAX AC versus normal, fan speeds, left versus right vents, and recirculation versus fresh air.
If the engine temperature warning rises, stop safely. An overheating engine is not an AC troubleshooting exercise.
Confirm climate mode, temperature setting, fan selection, recirculation, defrost, and whether automatic mode changes the result.
Check an accessible cabin filter and exterior air intake for severe blockage without dismantling the dashboard.
Note whether radiator/condenser fans operate, whether noise changes with fan speed, and whether water drains normally after AC use.
Record year, make, model, engine, ambient temperature, dashboard warnings, and any recent repair or collision.
Stop and call a professional when
- The engine is overheating, coolant is escaping, or a temperature warning appears.
- You smell burning, see smoke, find damaged wiring, or hear severe grinding from a moving component.
- The windshield cannot be kept clear enough to drive safely.
- The work requires opening or charging the refrigerant system, bypassing controls, working near moving belts/fans, or accessing high-voltage hybrid/EV components.
Better diagnosis
Information worth collecting
Record vehicle year, make, model, engine, ambient temperature, vent temperature if safely measured, fan-speed behavior, engine temperature, and whether the symptom changes at idle, while driving, or with recirculation. Photograph warning lights and control settings.
The goal is not to prove a part has failed from one clue. It is to give the next person—yourself or a technician—a clear operating picture.
